E.M.D.R.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing
E.M.D.R. is a powerful technique in trauma resolution. The technique involves rapidly moving the eyes back and forth while accessing images of the trauma. This movement activates the same neural pathways as those used in the Rapid Eye Movement (R.E.M.) portion of the sleep cycle. The R.E.M. cycle is when dreams occur.
This technique is useful in all types of trauma ranging from rape or abuse to a difficult break up in a relationship or being “stuck” in a less than ideal job. E.M.D.R. is extremely effective with symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder such as nightmares and flashbacks.
E.M.D.R. changes a person’s perspective and response to a traumatic or painful situation. By desensitizing them to the triggers or reminders that reawaken their feelings of terror, panic, sadness, rage, etc., the person can experience life without the intrusion that traumatic residue leaves.
Following E.M.D.R., a person is typically able to reflect on a traumatic or painful situation without re-experiencing all of the intense emotions present at the original event. |
