Hot Stone Massage

Hot stone massage is a specialty massage that uses, smooth, heated stones. The stones are often basalt, a black volcanic rock that absorbs and retains heat well. The heat helps tight muscles release more quickly than in a traditional massage. The stones allow for warming the tissue and allowing deeper tissues to be reached. While holding the heated stone, the therapist uses Swedish massage strokes. As the stones cool, they are replaced with heated ones.

Stones might also be placed on specific points along your spine, or in the palms of your hand to improve the flow of energy in your body. Sometimes cold stones are used if there is an area of inflammation or muscle injury.
